Program Benefits & Facts
LEAD Thurston County is a ten-month, local leadership development
program. It includes monthly, day-long sessions (Challenge
Days), an Opening and a Closing Retreat. The program is designed
to assist each participant in acquiring a broad understanding
of the complex issues facing the South Puget Sound region
and in building relationships that will facilitate collaborative
efforts in resolving today's and tomorrow's challenges. Topics
are explored through speakers, panels, field visits, seminars,
team projects and study groups. Participants gain insight
into how community decisions are made, who makes them, and
what alters and influences these decisions.
Our Program Objectives
Since 1993 LEAD Thurston County has been working to…
- Inform, challenge and educate participants about
the opportunities and needs of the community, as well as
the dynamics of social and economic change.

so that participants may develop their own skills and personal
style for application to civic and community leadership
positions.
- Develop interpersonal relationships and an esprit de corps
among participants which will provide a common ground for
working together on community projects.
- Create a dialogue and rapport amongst participants and
existing community leadership.
- Identify organizational and individual opportunities for
community involvement and assist in the placement of participants
in these positions.
LEAD Thurston County offers:
Participants increased knowledge, enhanced
skills, expanded contacts and recognition.

access to community leaders, broad based connections and visibility.
The Community a pool of knowledgeable, skilled
leaders enthusiastic and ready to serve.
Leadership Programs Benefit Everyone
Program participants aren't the only ones who benefit from
leadership programs. Every individual and group in our county
benefits when leadership programs are successful. Here's what
a Lilly Endowment study found:
"The success of a good Community Leadership Program
is usually invisible - a decrease in racial tensions, more
adults who can read and write, greater voter awareness…In
each city where there was low crime, excellent schooling…,
cultural options and superb health care, there was also a
Community Leadership Program."
To date, LEAD Thurston County has over 280 graduates who
are using their knowledge, skills and energy for the betterment
of our community. Whether you are a concerned individual,
member of a local organization, or business person, you have
and will continue to benefit from these dedicated, informed,
responsive leaders.
